CHAPTER 17

Jordan laid out the three pages on the captain’s desk. Two were typed, and one was handwritten in Edra’s tidy Tarikian script.

“This is the original, formally worded reminder.” He used Edra’s words. “That the ogres are free to follow their culture, but they were not free to force ogres to follow it.”

“This is the direct translation. And this is the one in the English phrasing we are used to using.” He had spent a few hours assisting with wording while still being true to the Tarikian.

The captain pulled the papers toward himself. He glanced at the handwritten one, then took his time reading through the other two pages before lifting his gaze.

Edra sat next to Jordan as though he was on board with the idea of having everyone in agreement. He wasn’t, mostly because he expected the idea to be shot down, which left people like Troy in limbo when they didn’t want to press charges against their kind and left him without protection.

“I can see what you are trying to do, Tendric. But I don’t know if it will stand up legally,” the captain finally said.

That was the problem now that mythos were people.

Before the bill, Edra had played very fast and loose, and Jordan had crossed that line and gone further than he was comfortable with.

“Speaking as Knight and the head of Mytho Servo, we need clarity around cultural practices. Not only that—there are children who were born here who have no interest in following the ways from a place they’ve never known. Their parents might want them to follow; their elders might demand it. And what child, or youth, or young man in this case is going to stand up if they have no backing?”

“I understand where you are coming from. Kids don’t always want to follow their parent’s religion.”

“That’s a little different.”

Jordan felt the hair-splitting about to start, and Edra could quite happily split one hair into a hundred strands. And he could argue Tarikian law and its application…Jordan wasn’t sure if it was part of his nature or the decades spent as the sword of the law. Either way, Edra with an actual law degree would be something to watch.

“For the most part, we are talking about young adults, not children, being coerced through violence and intimidation if they do not follow the path laid out,” Jordan said.

“And they are unwilling to report it because they will be shunned by their family.” The captain nodded as if he’d heard it all before.

“Or face further violence.” Edra leaned forward. “Which might spill over to threats and violence against human partners and friends.”

“I’ve read the file.” He looked at Jordan and held his gaze. “You are very close.”

He was. He was dancing on that line again; one wrong step would create chaos. “Should Troy press charges, I will step back. But I thought it worth having on record because if it goes further…” He didn’t want Troy or Sean getting hurt. He grimaced. “I don’t expect the problem to disappear.
